Einsten famously said, ‘We can’t solve problems using the same kind of thinking we used to create them.’  One of the principles behind Neurological Levels of Change is that you can’t solve a problem at the same level you created it. You have to shift to at least the level above.

Created by Robert Dilts and based on the work of others such as Gregory Bateson. One component of Logical Levels of Change is the environment in which we live.  As you look around you now, you can see your clothes, the space around you, the text in front of you. All of this is the environment where you are. Within this environment, we do certain things and we see people doing things. That’s our behaviour. Our environment and our behaviour are observable to the human eye.

What we can’t see, is what’s going on internally. We can’t see the skills and internal resources behind how a person is doing what they’re doing. We can’t see their beliefs and values; what’s important to them. We can’t observe their sense of who they are, their identity. Nor can we observe their sense of purpose. These each form different internal levels of a person’s experience.

We can use this model to ‘model out’ someone’s present state. We have strategies for everything we do. So for example, if someone is depressed, we can ask ‘How are you experiencing your depression?’

‘What are you believing?’ ‘What’s your sense of self?’ And often we find that the model for their present state at these different levels is deeply revealing. Perhaps we discover that they have a belief that they can’t do something, they don’t deserve something, that they are not enough, or that they believe they can’t be loved.

These are the kinds of limiting beliefs that we all have, which often operate at a very unconscious level. Being able to notice our limiting beliefs allows us to be able to change them into empowering beliefs and this offers a deep level of change.

How can this model be applied and used?

If you have a problem at the level of ‘behaviour’, you’re often not going to solve it conclusively simply by trying to do something different. You’re going to solve it by changing how you’re doing what you’re doing: i.e. your ‘skills and capabilities’. Similarly, if you have a problem with skills – perhaps you can’t do something – try solving it at the level above: i.e. your ‘beliefs’ about what you are capable of.

Getting clear on the higher levels of our beliefs and values, identity and sense of purpose is key to how we can create lasting change. Key to this is noticing and changing our limiting beliefs, as this can have a profound impact on us.

The same goes for our sense of our identity. Our behaviour is fundamentally an expression of our identity. Once we develop a clear sense of who we are or who we want to be, it can drive real changes in our behaviour. Once we recognise ourselves as, say, an honest person or a leader, our behaviour becomes honesty or leadership. In other words, the behaviour looks after itself.

Our sense of purpose is what connects us to the wider world and the system beyond ourselves. We all play a part in the unfolding of the universe, whether we like it or not. The questions we need to ask ourselves are: For what purpose? Why are we here? What impact do we want to have on the world? Once we get clear on our sense of purpose – whether it’s a spiritual awakening or a deep sense of what’s important in our work or our relationships – that then drives a sense of being and behaviour in the world that is transformational!

Personally, when I started NLP, I came to realise that my family had been pretty self-centred, always focused on ‘how do I get what I want?’ And I saw that in the wider world as well. I realised that what I needed for myself was to have a sense of purpose in the world beyond just being self-focused. I needed to shift to focusing on others and develop relationships of connection and trust. That was a revelation that led to me changing my life and becoming a coach.

This model can then really help people to align themselves with a sense of purpose, as it did for me. Logical Levels of Change can give us a sense of personal congruence where we can live in a way that is in harmony with all levels of ourselves: we can be true to ourselves, we can be the person we are meant to be, whether that’s as a coach, a writer, a storyteller, a leader or a manager.

Getting aligned with who we want to be, or who we really are, is profoundly transformational.

It allows us to create the kind of life we really want.
