Hi friend,

In 2005, I built a property investment business with a friend of mine.

Within about two years, we were turning over £100k a month. We had a team of fourteen and on paper, it looked like momentum, freedom and success.

And then 2008 happened. The financial crash hit and everything changed. For six months we fought to keep the business alive. We restructured, recalculated and worked longer hours, but eventually we had to make a decision to do something different.

I remember the day my business partner and I looked at each other and admitted something we hadn’t wanted to say out loud, that we weren't enjoying it anymore. And "we don’t have to keep doing this".

So we closed the business and I put my life into storage. I bought a one-way ticket to India to complete my NLP Trainer Training and then travel the world. And here I am living in India again, nearly 20 years on...

It wasn’t the 'sensible' decision and it didn’t look strategic. But it felt alive and at that point in my life, feeling alive mattered more than looking successful, or staying in an industry that drained me of my life-force.

That decision changed everything. When I reflect on the major transitions in my life, they haven’t come from clinging to the old or swimming up-stream. They’ve come from listening to the quiet whispers and internal longings for more (following the clinging!). The real change happened from going down-stream and following my energy and excitement, rather than fear and attachment.

Sometimes we outgrow what we’ve built and that can be deeply confronting. Richard Rohr calls it 'falling upwards'.

So here are some questions to consider:

  • Where in your life are you succeeding… but no longer aligned?
  • Where are you continuing simply because you feel you 'have to', not because it feels true, or you really want to?

The bravest move isn’t always doing or building more. Sometimes it’s choosing something radically different.

If you’re standing at a crossroads and unsure which path is truly yours or how to let go of the old, you might want to read a book called Necessary Endings. It came a time in my life when I had to let go but didn't know how to. It's a great read.

And if you feel like you a little more support, feel to reach out for a deeper conversation. I've got your back!

With love,
Tristan
